Church Attack Sparks Tensions Between Ukraine, Hungary
(MENAFN) An arsonist recently set fire to a church in the western Transcarpathia Region of Ukraine and defaced its walls with anti-Hungarian slogans, according to police reports.
This incident has sparked strong condemnation from Budapest, further straining the already delicate ties between the two nations.
Law enforcement officials stated that the attack occurred on Wednesday evening in the village of Palad Komarivtsi.
An unidentified individual reportedly broke into a Hungarian Greek Catholic church, ignited a fire at the entrance door, and vandalized the building by scrawling "Knife to the Hungarians" in black paint across its facade.
Just two days later, local authorities apprehended a 28-year-old resident of the village who is suspected of being behind the attack.
Police also noted that the graffiti was intended to "destabilize the situation in the region and incite national and religious hatred."
The attack has drawn severe criticism from Hungarian officials. Prime Minister Viktor Orban denounced the incident, framing it as part of a broader effort to suppress the Hungarian minority in the region.
He stated, “Forced conscription, murder, church arson, incitement, intimidation. This is all happening to our people, the Hungarians, in Transcarpathia. We will not let it slide, you can count on this!”
