Blaze Damages Oil Storage Site in Malaysia

(MENAFN) A blaze erupted on Saturday at an oil storage installation in southern Malaysia, leading to the destruction of nearly 60 percent of the facility.

According to a state-run news agency, the inferno generated towering dark smoke that rose over 100 meters (328 feet) into the sky in the Johor Bahru District of Johor state.

"Preliminary estimates indicate about 60% destruction. Strong winds caused the fire to spread to a disused waste oil storage area," stated the Johor Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre, as quoted by the news outlet.

Multiple blasts were reportedly heard during the incident, sparking fear and distress among the local population.

Fifteen vehicles were confirmed damaged due to the fire, although no injuries or deaths were reported.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for residents living nearby as a safety measure.

"The cause has yet to be determined, but based on worker accounts, it is believed to have started in the recycling and oil storage areas. Nearby residents were ordered to evacuate as a precaution and will be allowed to return home once the area is confirmed safe," explained Zone I deputy chief Senior Fire Superintendent II Rosfarawadi Ismani Ismail.
